Every American Red Cross blood drive is hosted by a volunteer, someone just like you. Businesses, churches, synagogues, community organizations, and schools all work voluntarily to assure that there is enough blood for anyone in our community who needs it.

To be sure we have enough donors weekly, we work weeks and months ahead of time to identify who will host the bloodmobiles each and every day, and to determine how many donors to expect at each bloodmobile.

New bloodmobile hosts are always needed, especially around major holidays. In other words, we need you!

It’s a good feeling to know that your volunteer effort will make a real difference in someone’s life.

And last but not least, please see the difference you are making in so many recipients’ lives and accept a big thank you, we couldn’t do it without you!

We all expect blood to be there for us, but barely a fraction of those who can give do. Yet sooner or later, virtually all of us will face a time of great vulnerability in which we will need blood, and that time is all too often unexpected.

From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service, of generous, strong and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. The honor, spirit and resources of the American people comes forth with neighbors helping neighbors in need — during earthquakes, floods, fires, storms — and also for the deeply personal and often quiet disasters that require a gift of blood.

Collecting enough blood to meet the needs of area hospitals is our focus. We strive to make the experience as pleasant, quick and simple for our donors as possible by offering convenient appointments. Volunteers welcome and prioritize arriving donors, including walk-in donors and make follow-up appointments.

Blood drives are scheduled throughout the year on various days of the week. Donors can select the days which best fit their schedules and make an appointment to save even more time upon arrival at the site.

Donors are called ahead of their appointments to assure that they remember them as well as to make changes if schedules have indeed changed.

All human blood may look alike but when it is tested using special agents, differences become apparent. The main red blood cell groups are A, B, AB, and O. The letters stand for two antigens (chemical substances that can be targeted by one's immune system) labeled A and B.

  • Group A blood has only the A antigen                                           bloodtypesm.jpg
  • Group B has the only the B antigen
    Group AB has both
    Group O has neither
Blood groups further classified as Rh-positive or Rh-negative are called blood types. Blood is Rh-positive if the blood antigen labeled "D" is present and it is Rh-negative if the "D" antigen is absent.

You can't donate red blood cells to just anyone and you can't receive blood from just anyone — blood groups need to be matched. For some clarification on this please go to: http://www.givelife2.org/aboutblood/bloodtypes.asp
